Why do some Pokemon have nicknames? I know how they get them, but why...what do they mean? How do you choose?

I think this one wants another name, but...names are important. I don't know what would be best.

Um...friendly. Happy, and slow. He likes to climb things...and people. [It's still rocking back and forth in a slow wave, its face the picture of :D .]

It's the name of a character from a book I used to read my daughter when she was little. I suppose it would fit a bear like pokemon better though.
