Why do some Pokemon have nicknames? I know how they get them, but why...what do they mean? How do you choose?

I think this one wants another name, but...names are important. I don't know what would be best.

And so many of us want to be exactly the same as each other and it's so boring. More uniqueness would be good for us.

Well, Pokemon names don't have to be like human names, I just spout off different words until I find one that my new friend likes! It takes anywhere from a few minutes to a few days!

I don't think he knows that move. ["Laa laaaaa"] It feels like he'll be happy with just about anything...but Mudball just sounds gross. [hmmm] Mud...muddy...swamp...slip...

Shelgon might try to eat me if I called him something cute. [Is that a joke? Was it serious? The world may never know.] But Shellos and Meowth are...kind of cute...

I used the names they already had, but then I caught one who wanted to be called something else... [frowns.] It seems important here. There's a lot of the same kinds of Pokemon around.

Well, if it's important to them make sure it's a name they reeeeeaaaaaaally like! Do you have anything to go on!?

Uhm... I think it's special...if you give them nicknames. Otherwise they're just "Starly" or "Ralts" like others. [The starly on his shoulder fluffs up, in apparent agreement.]

You can come up with a few things...things you like or something like that.

And you can ask them if they like it. [That's how Chihiro's done it, anyway!]

It sounds like a lot of people do. What kind of names do you come up with?

[He doesn't really get the whole "not being just another x" thing on a personal level, but if that many people are saying it, he guesses that's just how things work around here.]

-I have a Starly, too. [aha...if they talked over these Pokegears without the two Starly around, it'd be harder to tell which one they were talking about, right?] ...That must be why it's important.

Well, so far...there's names from books, names from things they remind me of, naming after what they can do, naming after other people...um, a lot of options. [light sigh...]

Music related stuff. I'm debating on branching out to, you know historical stuff. They might like that better.

Hehe... Yeah, something like that.

Do any names just...pop into your mind when you look at your Pokemon?

They remind me of things from home, but...if they need unique names, it's not fair to give them those names, is it? Pokemon should have Pokemon names, right? [The question - and what he's been trying to figure out - is just what a "Pokemon name" entails.]

I've named most of my pokémon after famous Americans. Except my starter, Waldo — he was named after a bird I... uh, knew.

[What an odd thing to say.]

Eheh, yeah...but you said he shoots mud at things. (Anyway, next suggestion!) What about Hero?

Mmm... If they're names you give them because they remind you of things from home... I don't think that's bad.

[Ooh.] That!...um, might work for someone else. [Though...when he thinks about it, none of his Pokemon really fit...so it's something to keep in mind for the future.] Or maybe he'd become more like a hero later on if I call him that. [Shellos seems fine with that. Shellos seems fine with anything, really.]

Do people usually give Pokemon matching names? [That adds a whole new level of complexity...]

...Is it this hard for everyone? [He feels and looks like he's going to give himself a headache, thinking this hard about names. But things are trickling to mind, now, inspired by the advice he's gotten. Objects, titles, people...] Array's name is from...data structures, right? [So, concepts - that's fair game too.]

Well, for example, when my slowking first joined us as a slowpoke, it had turned out that she'd traveled all the way from the well in Azalea Town to Goldenrod City trying to follow us. So a name like "ardent" was fitting, given her dedication, but calling her something like "caprice" wouldn't fit that personality at all.

Nah. It depends on them and their trainer friend. What you two come up with together is your bond in a way.

(She almost feels like facepalming; he's not really helping out!) ...Did you have any names in mind?

Aheh... I think so... A lot of people think names are pretty important, after all.

[He smiles sheepishly, and then he nods.] That's right.

[Truly, that Shellos is a beauty.]

Well, if he's indecisive, just go ahead and give him a name of your own.

[Headshake.] I don't know anything about names...it feels weird, like it's too important to just decide on. Or for me to decide on.

[What an anime thing to say.] So it should be something that's important for both of us. I didn't think of that...

They don't mind having human names?
